MUSIC with MUMMY’ provides a range of fun and educational music classes for babies aged from 12 weeks and children aged 3 years and under and our small and friendly classes run throughout the UK and overseas.

Jolly Babies classes are specifically designed to give young babies their first musical experiences and this delightful class is a gentle introduction to music and rhythm for them and a great way to bond with your baby through music.  These sessions are perfect for babies up to 14 months approximately before they take the next step into Music with Mummy.

Music with Mummy classes are carefully structured yet lots of fun for everyone who attends.  Children come along each week with their special adult, whether that is mum, dad, a grandparent, or another carer, and each half term we combine learning about a simple musical concept alongside a story theme that runs for the half term.  Each session involves singing, action, movement, percussion and also aims to develop good social skills and listening and concentration too.

We have a refreshment break. Our chief aim is enjoyment. Monday evenings in the hall are full of laughter and happiness.
It costs £1-00 for membership and £1-50 a night for each evening's dancing.

Marldon Bowls Club has a thriving Shortmat Section which meets each Wednesday in the Winter months in the Village Hall. The sessions are well attended and provide friendly yet competitive shortmat bowling for Members of Marldon Bowling Club. The game is a good introduction to the longer outdoor version but is a complete sport in itself. There are leagues within Torbay and the Club has two teams, the Moles and the Magpies, which play competitively against other local clubs. The game is played on a mat and most of the rules are similar to the longer version of the game. The main difference is the Block which is placed half way and centrally on the rink and the bowl must not touch this on its travel up the rink.

Marldon Gardening Club

The origins of Marldon Gardening Club go back to 1970, when a Flower Show was held in conjunction with the Apple Pie Fair. The Village Hall Committee asked Mr. Roy Underhill if he would be the Secretary of the Flower Show to provide continuity for arranging judges, booking the marquee, etc. As there was strong support for the Flower Show in the Village, Roy was then asked by Mr. Fred Westaway and Mr. Louis Goss to form a separate Gardening Club. The new Club met monthly in the Village Hall, and held an annual Flower Show on August Bank Holiday Monday. Today the Annual Flower Show is still held on the same date, but the Apple Pie Fair is now held on the last Saturday in July. We still meet on the first Tuesday of the month, and have a different speaker each month. We have about 50 members, and are always seeking new members. Anyone wishing to join should please contact Mr. D. Ibbunson (01803 521637) or Mrs. M. Eastley (01803 551940). Our subscription is £3.50 per year, although our meetings are open to non-members. We also have Spring and Autumn Shows for our members. Our Annual Show has an "Open" class which anyone from outside the Parish can enter, and a "parishioners" class which is restricted to residents of the Parish and Kings Ash, and members of the Club. Socially, we have a Wine & Cheese evening in December, and a Christmas dinner usually held at Castle Barton restaurant.

A Brief History of Marldon Pantomime Group and list of previous productions

Marldon pantomime Group was formed in 1982 by Zanna Goddard and a small enthusiastic band including the vicar, David Prothero, and local man, Andrew Dangerfield, who was soon to become a vicar.

Zanna produced and directed the first three shows and handed over the magic wand to Viv Arscott who has produced every show since, that is, until this year, more of that later. Viv had a very steep learning curve but got much encouragement and help from the "new " vicar, Grant Brockhouse plus a dedicated team of regulars, cast and backstagers, many of whom are still participating. This was made evident by the 2000 version of Snowdrop and the Dwarfs which had seven of the original cast - albeit slightly older!!

Since then the group has been extremely lucky to have a wealth of talent to tap into, from actors to musicians and choreographers, costume designers and props makers, set builders and scenary painters, lighting and sound engineers: the list of people who have given their time and talents is enormous and greatly appreciated by all who come to see the finished product. The group hopes to continue for many years to come, and as long as that talent continues to emerge, it will. If you have a particular talent or a desperate desire to be involved, don't be shy, come and join us.

Our current production is Sleeping Beauty and is to be performed in the last week of January (Wednesday to Saturday). This year sees a temporary change in the production team with Stephanie Webb taking the helm to guide the group, as Viv has taken a year off.(to be in the audience)

The Marldon Local History Group

The Marldon Local History Group formally came into being on 11th September 2001, and has a formal Constitution, a Committee and the usual Officers. The Group has found that there is a great interest in the Parish about the history of the Parish, especially in the comparatively recent social history with which the older members of the community can relate and identify. This is reflected in the continuing success of and attendances at the Group's quarterly Open Meetings, which are open to Members and non-Members, and at which the Group displays any newly acquired material as well as existing appropriate material. Our Open Meetings have a Guest Speaker or theme of local or seasonal interest, and have become an incentive for both Members and non-Members to bring us their own personal contribution to our ever increasing Archive.

In addition to its own Archive of material, the Group has copies of the Parish Church records of births, marriages and deaths dating back to 1598, which are also available at the County Records Office in Exeter.

Apple Pie Fair

Marldon Apple Pie Fair is held annually on the last Saturday in July

George Hill 1875

George Hill
A Brief History of Marldon Apple Pie Fair

The people of Marldon owe a great deal to the late George Hill, who died towards the end of the 19th Century, and who was probably responsible for the Marldon Apple Pie. His family still live in the village. During the apple season, George used to travel weekly to the Market at St. Marychurch on a donkey, with panniers full of apples. On his return the panniers would be full of washing to be laundered. On the day of the annual fair and sports, held in Cary Park in St. Marychurch, George drove a cart carrying a huge apple pie, drawn by two black donkeys wearing harness and reins decorated with plaited straw, around the town. The pie, oval in shape and about the size of a kitchen table, ended its journey at the fair and was eaten with cream. The Marldon Apple Pie was a feature of the annual fair at St. Marychurch until George died. Marldon had its own annual show and sports every September, from 1888, and the Marldon Apple Pie was a feature of the procession to the field. It was drawn in procession behind a band from the Royal Oak (now a private residence) where it was baked, to the field. According to the recorded memories of villagers, the pie was baked in several sections and assembled as a full pie on the donkey cart. The villagers referred to the annual event as “Apple Pie Day”. Unfortunately, the fair ceased to take place for some years in the 20th Century. In 1958 a group of enthusiastic researchers, led by Mr. Fred Westaway, pieced together the story of the Marldon Apple Pie, decided to revive the annual village day and called it Marldon Apple Pie Fair. In recent years a large pie was baked at the Torbay Chalet Hotel (later the Torbay Holiday Centre, but now no longer in existence) in Marldon. The event draws together members of village organisations and residents of Marldon in a combined effort to produce the Apple Pie Fair, and attractions include various arena events, an exhibition of craft activities and local artists in a large marquee, plus numerous side-shows and stalls. The main organisation of the Fair is done by an ad hoc sub-committee of the Village Hall Council, and the profits of the Fair help to keep Marldon’s fine Village Hall in “APPLE PIE ORDER”. The Fair is held on the last Saturday in July each year.

Marldon Cricket Club is 25 years old in 2009.

We play other Village teams or second XI teams in South Devon. All fixtures are friendlies and whether you are a novice or experienced, young or old, you will be made very welcome.

The Annual Club Tour will be to Somerset in 2009.
